the flowing spring of happiness

The homily at mass today struck a certain part of me. The priest talked about simplifying life. He talked about the different things that we pray for whether it’s grades, a dissertation or performance on the job. And then he said something so simple yet it struck me as so wise. I fail to put it as well as he did but he said something like: “The hardest thing people have trouble with is recognizing that what they’ve been given, right in front of their eyes, is a gift from God.”

Nothing new, right? It’s not complex but it’s good to be reminded of this every now and then. Sometimes Life feels like it’s not going your way because you feel like you need more money, a better career (or one that should be further along) or a home to purchase. The stress and sadness of not having these things often deserves a slap in the face (figuratively speaking).

See this life you have? Not the money, but the friends and family that support you. Not the car, but the health that sustains you. Not the career, but life’s experiences that fulfill you. That is a gift. Simplify.

I came home today and put on some music. I randomly decided to go through Picasa and stroll through the pictures I’ve taken throughout the years. Looking at the different pictures over the years brings warmth over my soul.

Here’s a sample of a random, funny pic Em and I took when we went to eat Japanese food in the city on a random weekend. Seeing these made me smile.

The Circle of Life

Meet Justin, Alice’s first child (Alice is Emily’s older sister). He was born Tuesday morning and weighed 6 lbs and 9 oz.

My cousin is currently visiting me and my family in Torrance. I found out today that his father-in-law passed away early this morning due to terminal liver cancer.

Thus is the Circle of Life. With death comes life.

I had a realization today. I was speaking with my mother on the phone when she informed me of the news. After our conversation, I was thinking about the korean word for “passing away.” I asked her about it later and it’s true. The korean word for “passing away” literal means “to return” or “to come back.”

Writer’s Blog

I just saw what is possibly one of the lamest custom license plates ever. The car was a black 528i. The license plate read “528IGUY.”

Some of you may have noticed (others probably have not… ok most of you have not) that I haven’t blogged in a while. Maybe I just have writer’s blog– ur block. Actually I think it’s just sheer laziness. On several occassion I thought of something interesting/witty/clever/funny to write about but, alas, I didn’t.

it's not just the scenery sets that are fake

So how about a life update? I’m currently in LA working at MySpace, a partner to SimplyHired (where I work at). The people here are so LA they make me feel like I’m not from LA (granted I did grow up in the ‘burbs). I’m surrounded by tats, piercings, goth, band t-shirts and silicone. Perhaps the employees are a good sample of the kinds of people you expect to find on MySpace.

My commute sucks so my life for the past week has either been at the MySpace building in Beverly Hills, in the car, or in bed (with a wee-bit of gym activity here and there). Driving sucks. Freeways suck. Ugh. There’s something about LA that’s feels like home and like a place I don’t know anymore. Perhaps this is what my father meant when we were in Pusan (his hometown) the last time and he said, “I don’t recognize anything, anymore.”

I guess that’s life for you. It changes, it moves. You move and you change. Things just don’t stay the same…. except for the 528I Guy. You know that he will always be, now and forever, the 528IGUY.
