The effects were over-the-top for a Wong Kar Wai film. Normally he sticks to natural gritty effects like rain and vintage time settings in the 1950s. I was pleased to see the addition of Wong Faye into this movie. I don't think she's been in one of his films since Chungking Express, correct me if I'm wrong. I read in the reviews that he gave a preview and the people did not enjoy the film because not many of effects had put into place. I think he finished the film months after he showed it at Cannes. I went to the premiere of this film at Cannes in May 2004. Didn't see it though. Just ogled at the celebrities for a while. Interesting how how long it takes to reach the States. Oh!
